When the VFF set a quarter-final target for Vietnam U23 at the 2026 Asian Games, most reaction in Vietnam was a cautious agreement: the goal sounded reasonable, neither too ambitious nor too low. I read it the other way. With the current squad, the quarter-final is a floor, not a ceiling. And the most worrying variable for Vietnam U23 at this Asian Games lies elsewhere, not with Uzbekistan. Do that, and the quarter-final ticket is essentially within reach. These players even have the right to think about matching their predecessors: a semi-final, or beyond that, a medal. That is the easy part. The hard part sits elsewhere. When people talk about stability, they usually stop at the fact that 16 players know each other's faces. I think that reading is superficial. What creates value at a tournament like the Asian Games is not familiarity, but the number of minutes played together inside a system with principles.
